“The Servant o’ Twa Maisters”, a three-act comedy in the Scots language, adapted from an Italian original, is to be presented in the Parish Church Hall on Thursday 25th, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th March.

Tickets (adults £5, juniors £3) will be available from Thomson, Newsagent, Kirkcudbright.

The Friends of Dunmuir Park have complained to the Care Commission about the condition of the fabric of the building which is owned and maintained by the Council. Dunmuir Park home provides long-term and respite care for adults with learning disabilities, many from the Kirkcudbright area, and has been threatened with closure despite strong local support to keep it open. An exhibition of poetry and photographs by Alyson King, from Carsphairn, opened in the Tolbooth Art Centre this week.

Alyson said, “In the mid 90s I was encouraged to enter a poetry competition organised by the International Society of Poets. I sent them a piece titled ‘The Kiss’. It won and subsequently earned me the honour of International Poet of Merit. With the accolade my work became known in America, where the Society is based and I have won the International Poet of Merit a further twice. I was also nominated for Poet of the Year.

In this exhibition I am presenting my most recent work Shadow Lands. Its purpose is to raise awareness of dementia and similar conditions. “Also exhibited are some of my recycled works of art. I like to do this as many lovely items are so often discarded so I look for the broken, unwanted etc and bring them to life in a variety of ways. This venture is know as ‘Scratch the Surface’.”

The exhibition is open Monday to Saturday from 11 am – 4 pm.
Admission is free.

The failure of Dumfries and Galloway Council to identify funding to repair Kirkcudbight’s ailing public toilets has recently caused considerable dismay among local elected representatives. For nearly a year now the Gents and the Disabled toilets have been closed due to structural failure. The Ladies toilets remained open but, apparently because of vandalism, have also recently closed.

The toilets in the Town Hall have been made available during the daytime, and 1 portaloo and 1 disabled portaloo are positioned at the Harbour Square. There used to be laminated signs on the fencing directing people to the toilets in the Town Hall but these have gone and not been replaced. The situation has been identified as wholly unsatisfactory, and urgent action needs to be taken to give much better toilet provision before the easter holidays.

The next meeting of Kirkcudbright Community Council will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 10th March in the Council Chamber in the Town Hall. Attending will be Mr David Allan, Head of Neighbourhood Services, DGFirst, D&G Council, who will be indicating the course of action required to get the toilets back into operation again.

Community Council meetings are open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
